Tradition and growth define La Salle University, an institution of higher education that is directly connected to the history of Canoas, one of the most prosperous and productive regions of Brazil. Its campus encompasses more than 54,000 m², including a wide area of Atlantic Forest and plenty of facilities.

Throughout its history, La Salle University, inspired by Christian values, has maintained its primary objective to educate and train people who, upholding consistent values, work towards a more equal, fraternal and participatory society.

The Institution invests heavily in its internationalization process, and boasts a roster of 60+ partner institutions across the world. Always steered by the principles of the La Salle Network operating in all continents, Unilasalle Canoas maintains in its essence a commitment to people appreciation and community development.

In 2017, the then La Salle University Center was accredited as a university, achieving the highest level of organizational complexity among the different types of Brazilian institutions of higher education. The quest to obtain accreditation as a university emerged in 2013, after defining the Provincial Council of Lasallian Brothers, responsible for the La Salle Network for education in all of Brazil. Based on this decision, the institution established its institutional development plan, focused on actions that would enable it, in the mid-term, to achieve the indicators recommended by the Ministry of Education to obtain its accreditation as a university and maintain the quality of the education it provides, which is a Lasalle staple.

History of La Salle University

La Sallian education in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, started at Instituto São José, today Colégio La Salle, one of the first La Sallian schools in Brazil. On March 4, 1908, the institution opened as a boarding school dedicated to basic, trade and agricultural education. From 1926 to 1992, it also housed the religious education courses for De La Salle Brothers.

Created by a decision of the Board of Funders on August 2, 1972, Centro Educacional La Salle de Ensino Superior (CELES) – a college – started operating on August 6, 1976. The first programs offered were Social Studies, Portuguese, and Pedagogy, the latter focused on teacher training according to the Congregation’s philosophical principles.

In 2004, Centro Universitário La Salle was reaccredited under Ordinance 1473 of May 25, 2004. The Institution’s becoming a university center (Centro Universitário La Salle – Unilasalle) allowed it to add new undergraduate programs in the years that followed, as well as reorganize existing programs, at all times with the approval by its University Council (CONSUN).

Every year, Unilasalle intensifies its participation in the various associations of Higher Education Institutions in order to cement the already existing ties between the La Salle Network and the other institutions. The actions carried out encourage academic exchange in terms of education, research and extensions, and make it possible to further joint practices that enhance the quality of higher education on a global scale.

Dean’s Message

Dear students!

Welcome to La Salle University, an institution belonging to the La Salle Education Network, operating in over 80 countries on every continent. We are members of the International Association of the 73 Lasallian Universities around the world.

Working in the realm of higher education in Brazil since 1975, Lasalle University takes pride in its history, marked recently by its accreditation by the Ministry of Education as a university, the most complex level of organization of Brazilian educational institutions. This demonstrates the institutional growth experienced by the entire academic community, which challenges us day-by-day to enhance our processes and achieve academic excellence in teaching, research and extension.

Among our principles, we emphasize Christian and Lasallian inspiration and living and the value of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. This also reflects the result of the university’s integration with national and international academic mobility, as well as with companies and governments. In addition, our commitment to society also gave us official accreditation as one of the Brazilian Community Institutions, a seal of commitment toward the development of our community.

Our students, proud of and committed to the building of the university, in partnership with Lasallian staff, are responsible for this marvelous achievement that gives us all much joy.
We are La Salle University!

Welcome to your Community Institution.
